There’s a lot to love about the new Pretty Please single “Wormy,” not the least of which is the way it goes about encapsulating everything that makes the trio’s music so thrilling. Thunderous guitars, punishing grooves, tension-and-release dynamics, tuneful vocals that make you want to scream along and punch through a wall at the same time—it’s all there and then some. The group’s longstanding Nirvana worship remains, thank goodness, and the production in general sounds bigger and more dynamic.
As the lead track from the group’s third release, Acedia, “Wormy” is a welcome signal that the band remains committed to their dirty grunge and lurching noise rock aesthetic, even as they work to refine their songwriting into something sharper and more commanding. Vocalist/guitarist Robee Whitmire sounds particularly inspired, channeling his anxieties into a melodic rasp that later explodes into a rough-hewn snarl worthy of pre-fame Cobain. Meanwhile, bassist Brian Martinez and drummer Thomas Martino keep the low-end taut and menacing, latching themselves tight to Whitmire coiled riffs while clearing ample space for his verses to breathe. The result is one hell of a vicious earworm, the kind that doesn’t so much get stuck in your head as it eats its way into your skin. Listen below.
Acedia is out tomorrow.
Pretty Please will celebrate the release of Acedia tomorrow night at 529 when they play in support of the Powder Room and the Cloth (Philly). Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5.
