It’s been over a year since we’ve heard from Phantom Electric, but today the band is back with “Tell Me,” a new single which oozes with wild oscillations of synthesizer, hooky choruses, and a persistent groove. It’s a dynamic track that delivers its earworm melodies with a casual pace. Frontman Nick Whitson’s voice barely pitches above a bedroom whisper during the whole song as he repeats, “Tell me, tell me / What it is you really want / Tell me, tell me / Are you better off alone?” If you aren’t careful, you may find yourself swooning after the restrained vocoder bridge hits and the beat drops again. As the cut crests to its dramatic and lush coda—which, honestly, is where Phantom Electric songs find their strongest moments—the band’s hypnotic shuffle of chords and sticky sweet textures envelop you in a warm haze. It’s a kind of trippy daydream, perfect for the waning days of summer.
