Trevor Flanders is no stranger to the spotlight, having served as the frontman for the sadly defunct alt-rockers Twin Criminal. For the past few years, however, he’s been lurking behind the drum kit for Atlanta punk trio SMALL. That’s certainly no knock on Flanders’ position, his propulsive chops form an integral part of what makes the band’s music so gripping. But there’s a difference in being the focal point of a project—the one who gives it voice—and another whose role is to support and amplify.
Working under the moniker Newt Ezrel, Flanders once again finds himself taking center stage. In an ambitious display of self-reliance, he recorded and mixed each song, along with performing every instrument. Although ostensibly a cowpunk project, his debut single embraces a broader spectrum of sounds, including elements of psychedelic pop and ‘60s garage. There’s still plenty of kick-up-the-dust intensity, though, especially on the single’s rollicking B-side.
Opening in a swirl of kaleidoscopic guitars, “Legionnaire 148” kicks things off in mercurial style, alternating between hip-swaying abandon and cryptic confessional. The song’s yodeling chorus is a delightfully disarming touch, a sharp burst of pinkish light within an otherwise restless churn of color and mood. It’s a perfect springboard for the track’s conflicted revelations, bridging the gap between accepting accountability and its often messy aftermath. “Who can dance while you’re kicking the horse,” Flanders queries at one point, stressing the need for reflection and moving past your failures.
Meanwhile, the aforementioned “Suits & Clientele” shows off the project’s more abrasive side, a galloping ripper that straddles the line between tightly wound and unhinged. On its own, it’s a blistering cut with crackling energy and hooks to spare. As a contrast to the A-side’s contemplative urgency, however, it’s power seems even more magnified.
Given that Newt Ezrel is currently a one-person show, it’s not clear what the future holds for the project. Additional songs have already been recorded, so we can at least expect a full record sometime sooner than later. Until then, take some time to soak this single in. Not everyone is built for the spotlight, but Flanders proves yet again that he can handle the glare.
