Back around this time last year, then Atlanta newcomer JantzJantz allowed us the pleasure of premiering one of his first singles, “No Lovin’ You.” In addition to providing an early look into the aspiring rapper’s aesthetic, the track also marked the first collaborative effort between producers Saint Nick and SenseiATL. Since then, the duo have teamed up on a several projects, including a string of singles from JantzJantz. So it’s no surprise that “Right Now” finds the gang reuniting once again for another bouncy, synth-laden cut that’s all about flexing on a former crush.
“When I started writing ‘Right Now’ I was honestly thinking about this girl I know,” JantzJantz explains via email. “Not gonna go into detail, but she moved to a different state and shit was getting a little rocky between us. I knew she needed me, and yea… just a lot of history between us. Private shit haha. I definitely wouldn’t call this a love song, though. The whole vibe of the song doesn’t even come off that way.”
Indeed, if the track has a vibe it’s an exuberant one. While Saint Nick and SenseiATL drop a sleek groove with crisp claps and hi-hats, JantzJantz uses his expressive voice to layer in the song’s throbbing melody. He’s proven before that he’s got an ear for hooks, and here he uses it to create plenty of space for fellow Atlanta rapper Drue, whose laid-back bars serve as a nice counter to the song’s otherwise bubbly flow.
“The track has a unique sound with a lot of energy, and that’s what I love about it,” says JantzJantz. “Not to mention this will be the first song I drop with my brotha Drue, another upcoming artist from Atlanta. He practically got me into rapping; dude always go hard.”
