A life without reflection tends to be one without much consequential growth. We can spend our days living hard and chasing good times, but there needs to be some process of self-examination and accountability. On their upcoming LP, Give in to Livin’, the long-running Athens outfit Hunter Morris & Blue Blood seek to do just that, crafting a ruminative record that Morris describes as “an overall existential what the fuck.” Put simply, the album will be an earnest attempt to take stock of the past in hopes of building a brighter, more fulfilling future.
New single “Up All Night,” which we’re excited to debut today, delves straight into the heart of the matter. “We used to party like it was nobody’s business / So afraid that life didn’t know what to gives us,” Morris sings at the onset. Cradled in warm synths and rippling guitars, the song serves as an admittance that much of his youthful recklessness was based on fear and a longing for purpose. Beyond that, however, it’s a hopeful, pleasantly catchy track that alternates between contemplative musings and autobiographical storytelling. By fusing the personal and the philosophical, Morris and company outline how past experiences, even negative ones, can act as springboards towards positive psychological transformation.
“‘Up All Night’ has some general nods to a hard-partying past that was, in hindsight, probably very rooted in a search for meaning,” Morris says. “But it also has very real references to an ex-girlfriend who saved me from myself one night a long time ago. She was really loving to me even though we both knew we wouldn’t be together much longer, and that taught me how to live out every moment like it might be our last and to always treat others with kindness and respect.”
