No sense beating around the bush, I suppose. If you’re going to name yourself after something as omnipresent and amorphous as love, you may as well lean all the way in. And so today we present to you newcomers abandcalledlove., along with their introductory single “Colors Bloom.” A collaboration between Ian Joshua Riley (Tenth Row, Harm) and former Loraine drummer Ryan Chandler Love, the group just announced themselves online about two weeks ago, so consider this your chance to get in on the ground floor.

And what exactly is it that we have here? Given their projects past and present, the expectation is some convergence of post-rock and post-hardcore. That certainly does play out, especially in the song’s final third, which sees a scaling lead blasting over a squall of distorted guitars, pounding drums, and emotive vocals. But elsewhere we see the duo embracing a brighter, more pop forward sound that relies more on melodic hooks than atmospheric textures or explosive riffs. It’s a suitable balance, one that ensures abandcalledlove. will stand out against the backdrop of the group’s previous work, while also accentuating the song’s themes of conflict, pain, and growth.

“‘Colors Bloom’ is a retrospective of a past relationship,” explains Love, “and learning to recognize and celebrate how both parties have grown as a result of what transpired in it, even if the relationship doesn’t necessarily end amicably. In my case, the person I was in a relationship with and I grew distant, and inevitably apart. It was toxic on both sides, but when it finally ended, that relationship had dramatically shaped the more well-rounded and independent people we both are today.”
