Like many upstarts, Jayden Webb is young and hungry. The Alanta rapper, who goes by the moniker pnut, works steadily, but he’s careful not to reveal or concede too much, dropping a track — sometimes two — every month or so. Currently he’s hovering on the far outer fringes of the Atlanta underground, and it’s entirely possible that’s where he’ll remain. Most of the lanes are mad crowded these days, leaving little room for newcomers to swerve.
It would also help if he was more consistent with his songwriting. But while there’s definitely some filler on his SoundCloud page, I’ve got to admit his latest single, “Diamonds,” comes correct. It’s the sort of awkward earworm that needs a few listens to take effect, but once it does it’s worth the extra plays. The production is streamlined and digestible, a mix of booming trap and breezy hip-hop that does a good job of clearing a path for pnut’s hazy, nonchalant flow. It’s not a game changer by any stretch of the imagination, but every artist needs to start somewhere.
