The auteurs of indie darlings Pinkest have always dabbled in cinema. On the short film debut To the Land of the Electric Angel, the gang cast themselves as the psychedelic ambassadors from a bygone era of showbiz, sent to our time to devastate house parties. But two years later, Pinkest are ready to shoot with a bigger budget, and their new single, which hit theaters Feb. 1, gives us a glimpse of what to expect on the set.
And what’s the plot this time? Well, it’s too early to tell. For all we know, the protagonist in the ELO-like bop “Here Leaves Today” could be stuck in a dream sequence, and he might still be struggling with the sheets for the snazzy B-side “The Heartbeat of America.” But we can definitely see that Pinkest have abandoned their astral wig-outs—for now, anyway—in favor of that cool British pomp that they’ve been reaching for since You Are a Camera. Despite Ethan Smith’s slightly hysterical act, the gang manages to sound crazy mature here—especially on the flip, where a smooth little jam toward the end echoes the impeccable AOR class of Traffic or Van Morrison.
Still, as moviegoers know, professional camera work doesn’t necessarily guarantee a good time. But right now we’ve got ghosts, mysterious factories, and vanishing portraits, so hopefully more reels of whimsical surrealism await when the band unveils their next feature later this year.
Pinkest will perform on Fri., Feb. 15 at 529 alongside Yukons, Kibi James, and Fran. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $12. 21+ to enter.
