Australian psych rock juggernauts King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard brought their frenetic live show to the Variety Playhouse on Wednesday night, treating the sold-out crowd to a mind-bending set that drew liberally from the band’s extensive (and seemingly ever-growing) catalog. As is often the case for the group, guitarist and frontman Stu Mackenzie was the fulcrum for the band’s performance, leading the charge with his contorted energy and endless array of searing leads. Over the course of the evening, the exceptionally talented seven-piece alternated freely between untethered tempest and finely-tuned machine, showing off the skill and wild versatility that has earned them legions of dedicated fans. Supporting King Gizzard were fellow Melbourne natives Amyl and the Sniffers, whose scathing punk anthems and high voltage live show earned them rousing approval from the enthusiastic audience.
