Record release shows are always a cause for celebration and reflection, a moment of cathartic release to acknowledge the difficult work and painstaking effort it took to birth a collection of songs into the world. Release shows are common enough; just about every week there’s an artist or group (sometimes several) throwing a party to commemorate their new record and the creative labor it took to make it. But a double release show? Now that’s something special.
Last Saturday brought us such an occasion with two of Atlanta’s most promising young acts getting together to celebrate their new albums. (You could call it three acts with the enchanting Jordan Reynolds and the gang in Rose Hotel also taking the stage in support.) We spent much of that week letting our readers know why Flamingo Shadow’s beguiling first full length, Earth Music, “…knocked the ball out of the tape deck park.” Or why, in my own words, the songs on Karaoke’s debut EP, How to Make You Boil, “…cloak themselves in mist, waiting for you to seek their secrets.” In short, the evening marked the release of two of the best local records to bless our earholes so far this year, so we only thought is right that Immersive contributor and photographer Jane Macedo Yang be there to capture the magic.
