It’s been a satisfying thing to watch the rise of Omni. With each new single or video the band unveils, a new pocket of fans emerges. And deservedly so — the trio is one of the sharpest, most exciting local acts going. Considering their pedigree — the group features former members of Deerhunter, Balkans, and Carnivores — the superior quality of the music isn’t surprising, but the way the city has rallied around them certainly has been. Sorry, but having seen how Atlanta chews up and spits out artists, call me a scene skeptic.
“Wednesday Wedding” is the third single to be revealed from the group’s upcoming debut LP, Deluxe, and it’s easily my favorite thing they’ve done yet. The track carries shades of Television, Devo, and early B-52s, but the band’s minimalist no wave approach feels fresh and singular. Those jagged, jerky guitars, somehow both effusive and panic-ridden at the same time, are fucking magical, especially when they’re paired against off-kilter pop grooves that make me want to contort my body in all sort of weird ways. It’s an epileptic fit of an arty dance track and I mean that in the best way imaginable.
