After releasing a couple of records on Chicago’s Trouble in Mind Records (including 2017’s rousing Multi-task) and touring non-stop, Omni are moving up in the world and signing to Sub Pop, a household name which has confronted conflict between it’s alt-rock pedigree and an evolving musical landscape, especially over the past decade. In the process of this mutating relevance, the label has released forgettable Beach House records, instant classics from Pissed Jeans, a head-scratching Bob’s Burgers compilation, and everything in between.
Enter Omni, who are poised to jolt the label with the nervous post-punk they’ve been perfecting ever since Frankie Broyles (ex-Deerhunter) and Philip Frobos (Carnivores) started jamming together as roommates. Their two new tracks are part of the Sub Pop Singles Club, so good luck scouring Discogs if you want a physical copy. But hopefully the A-side “Delicacy” will make it on to Omni’s next LP because damn it’s good. The guitar sound and call-and-response formula haven’t changed much, but the track is surprisingly relaxed and playful rather than dense and pressurized. According to Frobos, the track “came naturally to Frankie and I but felt like we were headed someplace new. It’s written about falling in love, with who would become my wife, on a 23-hour layover in Casablanca, exploring a new continent, feeling intrigued and truly alive.” Today kicks off Omni’s two-month national tour with Foals and Preoccupations, and there’s not an Atlanta slot on the calendar, which is a sure sign the band is about to blow up.
