Sounds Like: Thoughtful and patient, Possway’s songwriting unfolds gently in small revelatory waves. At first listen, his songs are beautiful, quiet, and still. Dig a little deeper, however, and tiny details start to emerge and slide into focus. Hypnotic samples, droning synths, and sharp bursts of noise combine to create an atmosphere of meditative serenity while Posway’s pointed reflections draw you further into his diaphanous world. To put things on the simplest terms: Sloping’s music is catchy enough to attract the casual listener, but only careful observers will reap the full rewards.
Releases: The project’s nine-song debut, Completed Songs, is out tomorrow via Sound as Language. Pre-orders are available here.
Mandatory Listening: Of the album’s three available singles, “Raft” is the most immediate and accessible. But the melancholy fog that settles across “Fitting Room” is where we find Posway performing his most alluring magic. Shifting between a hushed lower register and a gentle croon, his voice serves as a kind of guiding hand. “You’re looking for an out, and it’s fitting you look in the well-lit places,” he sings as the song blossoms from a stark acoustic dirge into a pulsing—but no less dejected—folk-rock groove. It’s a riveting cut about heartache, grief, and personal accountability, a pensive requiem from a songwriter talking bold new strides.
