Sounds Like: A wormhole inside your pillow that, when activated, warps the slumbering listener to a crumbling apartment in Leeds or Sheffield from 1979. Well, but it wouldn’t EXACTLY be Leeds or Sheffield from 1979, because it’s your dream, obviously, so you’d still see someone in the corner fiddling around with a heavily fortified iPad. Actually, if we wanna be accurate, this is a dream recorded by either Ariel Pink or John Maus on terminally fried magnetic tape, of either the Human League or OMD’s earliest jam sessions.
Releases: Sephine’s debut EP, computerforest, was released on Mar. 22 and is available for streaming/download now via Bandcamp.
Mandatory Listening: While only two minutes long, “Discothèque” showcases pinches of everything that makes Sephine such a compelling throwback. The classy sax and faux organs weave through each other like spirit threads from Tuxedomoon, while Anderson channels the feverish soul of oh so many fledgling post-punk frontmen. Even the song’s lyrics, which deal obliquely with the stoic DJs and gig-goers that frequent night clubs, smack of mentalities almost 40 years old. Of course, as Anderson knows perhaps all too well, vacant stares and clique-like exclusion haven’t gone anywhere in the present day.
computerforest by SEPHINESephine will perform on Sat., Apr. 14 at WUOG’s Spring Thing at the 40 Watt alongside Blue Bodies, Dan Clifford, LONER, and Group Grope. Doors open at 10 p.m.
