Sounds Like: Fevergreen’s dynamic indie rock is wild and exciting with mercurial songwriting that embraces a wide range of sounds and influences, including elements of folk, alt-rock, and dreampop. While much of their past work leaned towards darker themes and moodier atmospheres, their new material takes a sunnier approach, albeit not without hints of melancholy lurking around the edges.
Releases: On Friday, the band released their new EP Phased Portraits, the follow-up to their 2018 debut Us in Full Bloom.
Mandatory Listening: “Let It In” gently nudges the listener with its 6/8 tempo and Austin Vos’ earnest vocals. Admittedly the opening lyrics, “I hate to think I’m a failure / where I can walk the same trail / where I like to think I’m a savior / and I’m on top of it,” seem like a pretty note-perfect example of delusional male exceptionalism. But give them the benefit of the doubt. Fevergreen doesn’t really seem like they operate on that kind of cerebral plane. Instead, hang out for the song’s dramatic conclusion, which switches from soft croon to full on primal scream as Vos’ vocals climb higher and higher into the mix.
Fevergreen will celebrate the release of Phased Portraits on Fri., Sept. 13 at the Drunken Unicorn alongside Password:Password and Ayo River. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8. 18+ to enter.
