Sounds Like: It’s never wise to project too much based on a band’s first-ever single, but on initial listen, Challenger Deep sound less convoluted and more upbeat and melody-friendly than many of their contemporaries. The chops are certainly there, as is some glimmer of rhythmic ingenuity, but what really stands out is the way the foursome render their talents in service to the song rather than attempting to astound their audience with rapid fire fretwork or dizzying tempo changes.
Releases: The band’s debut single, “Immersive,” was released this morning via Bandcamp.
Mandatory Listening: Written by guitarist James LaPierre in response to the influence of addiction and its tendency to consume everything that surrounds it, “Immersive” is a buoyant, high-energy track meant to combat the sinister forces of depression and isolation that accompany the disease. Punctuated by scintillating riffs and a dynamic, airtight rhythm section, the single is, at the end of the day, a boisterous funhouse jam that should find a ready home among math rock fans, both casual and obsessive.
Challenger Deep will perform tomorrow night, Feb. 17, at the Pink Room alongside MIGHTY, worlds greatest dad, and Fooligans. Doors open at 7 p.m. All ages.
