Verily, half the charm of making beats is in the mask. You could argue — and, in fact, I will — that Burial wouldn’t have haunted nearly as many record collectors with his nocturnal city prowls if the man himself hadn’t been such an enigma. Now, Nihilis hasn’t cloaked himself in complete mystery, but “Black Noon” provides plenty of cover, as hazy loops drift across the pavement. Granted, this is Atlanta and not London, so instead of gliding through fog and rain, we’re bumping slow down side streets on a balmy summer night. Nihilis styles himself as “Gucci Mane’s spirit animal,” but he could easily morph into myriad other forms — Tricky’s American half-cousin, for instance — or, like Burial, simply melt into the shadows.
