One of the pleasures of writing for a publication that focuses almost exclusively on emerging local or regional artists is stumbling across aspiring artists like Rami Tawfik, aka MILU. The son of Egyptian immigrants, Tawfik has only been making music for a year, but already the young rapper, singer, and producer is releasing songs at a steady clip and collaborating with the likes of rising phenom Phay. For the most part, his style could be described as an atmospheric blend of R&B and hip-hop similar to Travis Scott or Post Malone, and while there isn’t exactly a shortage of slurred trap-pop anthems to listen to these days, his latest single “Runaway” shows a knack for balancing wavy hooks against jay cam’s hazy production.
“I’d love to have people in ATL really learn about me, and I wanna just be able to continue putting out bangers for people out here,” Tawfik writes in his submission email, before signing off with a quick “Much love.” It’s a simple sentiment, but after spending some time with his music, it feels sincere. The point being: If MILU can sound this convincing when he’s chasing trends, imagine what he might do if he started bucking them.
