Trap kings Migos deliver another summertime banger with “Pipe It Up,” the trio’s latest single from their upcoming major label debut, YRN: Tha Album. The song is a typical Migos affair: trunk-rattling bass accompanied by bubbly synthesizers and a clean piano melody leveled in the background.
Quavo and Takeoff attack their individual verses with the aggressive, larger than life nature that’s become the group’s calling card. The subject matter is no surprise — clubbing, money, women and weed — but what else is to be expected from the Atlanta club giants? The rappers, particularly Quavo, stay faithful to their distinct, triplet-layered rhythmic patterns, made popular after their 2013 breakthrough hit, “Versace.” The hurried lyrical style feels a bit dated, but the production, reminiscent of early trap classics like Lil Scrappy’s “Head Bussa” or YoungBloodz “Damn!,” guarantee this single will be ruining the foundations of clubs and cars alike. YRN: Tha Album will be out July 31 via 300/Quality Control/Atlantic Records.
