Technically, Mighty, a new project masterminded by 20-year-old songwriter Angelo Fiaretti, hails from Pittsburgh. But given that the group’s upcoming debut EP, Bye, Have Nice!, was recorded entirely in the kitchen of Fiaretti’s Atlanta home, was produced by ATL expat Daniel Gleason of Grouplove, and that his backing band features Gleason and C.J. Ridings of Big Jesus (who also engineered the record), we figured that would be enough local touch points to make this worthy of a post. Oh, and did we mention that Big Jesus’ Spencer Ussery and Johnny Dang of O’Brother also make an appearance on the record? Because they totally do.
So what has the young Fiaretti done to deserve this outpouring of local love and support? Well, for one thing, the dude knows his way around a hook. “Fingertip,” the lead single from Mighty’s Bye, Have Nice! EP, is a driving alt-rock jammer in the vein of Cage the Elephant or Young the Giant, and it succeeds in part because of the way Fiaretti corrals his visceral tumult and angular bursts of guitar into something catchy and clever. There’s nothing particularly new or innovative about what he’s doing, but that hardly matters when you’re cranking out high-octane scorchers like this. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of covering the Atlanta scene it’s that talent begets talent and by all indications young Fiaretti has what it takes to keep up with his more established peers. Listen below.
