The latest EP from Meat, College, echoes with the freedom of first takes and living room sounds. This relatively new project (since 2014) is an undertaking of multi-instrumentalist Doug Bleichner. Unlike the challenging and angular sounds of his main project Warehouse, College is a no-frills snapshot of psychedelic pop.
The four-song EP has a wandering quality despite clocking in at under nine minutes. Bleichner’s voice fades in and out dreamily, but his detached style leaves the lyrics somewhere between catchy and inconsequential. On the other hand, the playful guitar and bass melodies work to perfect effect, requiring the listener’s attention without devolving into overly intricate solos.
Bleichner harvests his hooks from the golden sounds of ’60s AM radio and ’70s art rock, and the decade leap between his influences results in a delicious blend of sounds, particularly on the standout track, “Halloween.” College is another effortless step forward for Bleichner, and while no one would ever wish for less output from Warehouse, hopefully he can continue to save some of his energy for more Meat.
