Atlanta’s Map of the Moon is one of those bands that I continue to run across online, but haven’t actually heard. Well, until now, of course. And, honestly, I’m not exactly sure what to make of them yet. The playing and songwriting on their latest single “give/you something 2” is certainly sharp, and there are enough detours and changes of pace to keep your attention focused on the journey rather than the destination. Both of these are net positives that speak to talent and some semblance of vision. And from a production standpoint, everything sounds fantastic. The mix is cavernous, offering the sense of deep space that lends some needed gravitas to the band’s attempt at a cosmic moniker. Each individual element sparkles with clarity and combine to create a multi-layered space rock vibe that is resonant. So why the hesitation?
The best way I can put it is that at times the track seems overly refined and bloodless. It lacks immediacy and a sense of spontaneity. Lyrically, it comes off as string of generic platitudes that have been strung together. The guitar solo is pleasant enough but it doesn’t sear itself into your psyche as it seeks to do. In the end, it’s likely a case of the perceived potential outweighing the final product. As criticisms go, that’s actually not a bad place to be. Map of the Moon have the tools and they’re headed in the right direction. They just need a little more time to get there.
