LINER NOTES is a collaborative partnership between WABE and Immersive Atlanta that focuses on local songwriters and the stories they tell. Created by WABE producer Myke Johns, each episode will feature an on-air interview discussing the origins, ideas, and meanings behind a particular song accompanied by a live performance video shot, produced, and hosted by Immersive.
I love songs that have an aha moment (or, in keeping with the spirit of the times, a #waitforit revelation). In the case of “Lucid Dream,” the majestic single from Book of Colors, it’s the second Andre Paraguassu’s vocals appear amidst the languid swell of strings and the soft pick and strum of his acoustic. As the song begins to unfurl, there’s a feeling of unison, of musicians locked in a sweeping arc that you dare not intrude upon. There’s a balance there that’s precarious and you wonder if the addition of any new sound or movement will disrupt that harmony.
But of course, it doesn’t. Paraguassu glides in confidently, his rich, expressive voice catching the melody at just the right instance and from there the song takes flight. Believe it or not, this is a stripped-down version of the track that appears on the group’s self-titled debut, a record which features contributions from fourteen local players, including members of local stalwarts Little Tybee, Faun and a Pan Flute, and Adron. Still, this rendition feels equally if not more resplendent than the original, the bare-bones simplicity providing an air of intimacy that lures the listener and engulfs them in the dream state that Paraguassu so poetically describes in the lyrics.
Recently, we assembled Paraguassu and members of Book of Colors’ string section at Eclectic Music in Ansley Park in order to capture this riveting performance. Check it out above and then make sure to visit WABE to learn about the dream that led to the writing of the song.
Book of Colors kick off their tour tonight at the EARL. Supporting them are fellow locals Fantasy Guys and Soft Parade. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $8.
