The comet that is the indie folk-pop duo Kissing Booth has completed another orbit and come crashing back into our lives. The project, born from the combined efforts of Athens songwriters Patrick Brick of Futo and Erin Lovett of Four Eyes, released its latest single yesterday, “Hale-Bopp 1997.” The track is just the latest fruit of their collaborative labor and it finds the pair in top form.
The song takes its title from a comet of the same name that lit up the sky in 1997. Lovett assumes the lead on this one, her curious croon floating above the modest, waltzing instrumental. Her vocals dance while a piano follows her about lightheartedly, playing off of the melody and twinkling like stars, blinking in and out.
Jesse Mangum at the Glow Studio produced the track for the MOEKE Records Summer Singles 2016 series. As in years past, the series seeks to unveil “a new single by a different artist each week, all summer long.” MOEKE singles from this summer include original cuts from the likes of Jianna Justice and Downer, among others.
Kissing Booth started putting out music in 2014, first with two self-titled LPs, Kissing Booth Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. These albums were followed by another record released late in the year, Perfecto. Each work displayed the songwriters’ abilities to craft compelling, heartfelt songs while exploring some of the more amusing nuances of a relationship. Personal favorites include “Places Only We Know,” “Objects Unknown,” and “ur but.”
I suppose it should be said, even if it’s no secret: Brick and Lovett are an item. That’s something of an inevitable admission. But while most couples would be wary of joining creative forces and parading their songs around, Kissing Booth does it with a sense of humor and a genuine appreciation of both each other and the music they combine to create.
