The lineup for the third annual Irrelevant Music Fest (July 18-22) is here and it is out of control. What started out mostly as an excuse for a bunch of local bands to hang out and complain about all the things that musicians complain about, has grown into its own, filling a critical niche in the Atlanta music scene, and surpassing the expectations of fest creator and Irrelevant Productions boss Kyle Swick. As the name implies, Irrelevant Fest was initially designed to dig through the gutters of EAV and pick out all the dark, weird, and wild bands that are completely off the radar of other “local” festivals, but this year especially, the shows will be more expansive, in part because the festival has increased from a three-day to a five-day event, including a dance party at the Bakery.
The headliners feature obvious crowd-pleasers in Microwave, Dasher, and Pylon Reenactment Society, but further down the bill are some of best new and old local bands and touring acts that literally NEVER play Atlanta. Haram, the NYC crew who released the best hardcore record of 2017, will perform, and experimental techno artist Cube, aka the only human being to ever play an interesting version of “Hotel California,” will travel here from Oakland. In terms of local bands, not only are psych punks Arbor Labor Union playing, but lead singer Bo Orr will perform a rare show with his new band Solar Flower, Brannon Greene will bring Predator back to life yet again, and eclectic pop sweethearts Karaoke will bounce around stage and make you happy.
Individual day lineups and ticket prices have yet to be announced, but judging by past years, expect everything to fall into relatively neat categories, and expect the festival as a whole to be a steal. More details and an in-depth analysis of the lineup coming soon! Tickets go on sale April 30. Check out the festival poster below.
