Music critics are legally required to mention Kate Bush if there’s a video involving esoteric dance moves set to dreamy pop. And while the latest single and video from Athens four-piece Immaterial Possession would seem to fit that enigmatic mold, there is something darker and more mysterious at play here. A deeper look suggests an homage to the mystic sounds of the Mediterranean rather than the sprites and fairies of the English countryside.
For those unfamiliar with Immaterial Possession’s arcane take on psychedelic rock and pop, “See Through Stares” provides a lavish introduction. Merging their theatre and arts backgrounds with a gentle solstice spirit, the foursome offer prismatic sights and sounds that lure you in like a siren’s call. The cavorting throughout each scene works as a terrestrial and folksy interpretation of Dali’s dinner soirees, as the band tunes in to the delicate dance of nature and then turns it on its head. Here, cocktails bubble in strange hues and are served with a side of endless possibilities that leave the viewer wishing the show would never end.
Meanwhile, the track’s plodding shuffle channels the occult leanings of Blood Ceremony and early Black Widow while filtering out any gratuitously masculine aspects of classic rock. The psychedelic kitsch reminds the viewer of the band’s hometown, but Immaterial Possession bring a new bohemian energy to the table and pack enough ambition to back it up. The result is both surreal and refreshingly hypnotic.
