For a band considered to be a mainstay of Atlanta music, Hello Ocho sure do go through some considerable stretches of (seeming) inactivity. Much of that has to do, no doubt, with change and instability in their lineup, but I also get the sense that, for all their love of improvisation, the group has exacting standards about what their songs should sound like and where they should be evolving to as an artistic unit. Listening to their upcoming LP, In Portuguese, it’s clear the band still does the shimmering art-pop and jazz-folk thing better than just about anyone in town, but they’ve also grown immensely both as individual players and as a songwriting team. The album is by turns gorgeously melodic and fearlessly experimental, touching on elements of psychedelic pop, prog rock, free jazz, and more. The release show this Friday night at Mammal Gallery promises to be an event as much as at concert with projections provided by Kris Pilcher. In addition, local arts/lit/music collctive Deer Bear Wolf has invited a curated group of Atlanta visual artists to submit original work inspired by the new record, which will be on display and available for purchase at the show.
