Indie rock rules Atlanta this week, from up-and-coming acts to college radio stalwarts, so it makes sense that the pinnacle of the week is WRASFest, a celebration of all things local, underground, and alternative.
One of the best examples of the mix of new and old this week is tomorrow’s show at Terminal West. ’90s entrepreneurial rockers Built to Spill will bring their newly invigorated sound back to Atlanta with support from one of this year’s most promising bands, Athens’ Mothers. Though entirely different in final product, both bands mix intimate lyrics with detailed instrumentation. This show has been buzzing for a while now and it recently sold out, so hopefully you were one of the lucky ones who snagged a ticket.
If you’re looking for something a bit more diverse, the French-Cuban duo Ibeyi will be at Terminal West on Wednesday performing their modern take on traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms. These twins are masters of fusing jazz and dance in a way which still pays homage to every facet of their heritage. Atlanta duo CLAVVS open the show, promising to get the party started early with their infectious, hook-heavy pop.
This brings us to Friday, the only day of the week that forces a difficult decision. Not only is WRASFest taking over both floors of Mammal Gallery, Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield is coming back to Atlanta by way of Aisle 5, this time with support from her sister Allison. If you haven’t yet seen her ever-maturing take on indie rock don’t sleep on this. But, if you want to get the most for your money, our best bet is WRASFest. This year’s fest pulls from a wide variety of genres, as evidenced by the dual headliners BOSCO & Speakerfoxxx and Muuy Biien. The 15-act show not only features some of the best R&B and hip-hop to come out of Atlanta recently, it also includes a rare performance by local synth weirdos deadCAT.
