Russell RockwellAthFest is done, the holiday weekend is almost over, and the dog days of summer are back, making most of us question our residency in ATL. But don’t be like me and just mope around at home. After shoving large quantities of BBQ in your face, there are bunch of shows to re-energize you this week. Local release shows dominate the calendar for the next few days, beginning with Blood Drunk Records’ flagship band Swank Sinatra’s release of Sober Cobra today at Jack’s Pizza.
On Thursday, there are two more local records dropping. Ben Trickey will be releasing a new batch of dense, gripping tracks at the Earl with support from Jeffrey Bützer and the Bicycle Eaters. Also, make sure you swing by the back room of Argosy next door to catch the very anticipated release of Omni’s debut LP, Deluxe. The trio features former members of Deerhunter and Carnivores and seemed poised to have a breakthrough year. Though the band won’t be performing, they will be providing a DJ set for what is sure to be a wild party.
The Earl’s 17th Anniversary Show with the Rock*A*Teens is the must-see show this week. If you weren’t around in the mid ’90s when these genre-bending rock and rollers were blowing up the scene, make sure you stop by the Earl on Saturday so you can be flabbergasted as to why the band isn’t a household name. It’s sure to be a rowdy show, so if you’re checking out Estoriafest during the day, you might want to take it easy on the hootch.
Afterword: It still blows my mind that Modest Mouse and Brand New are playing the Chastain Park Amphitheatre on Sunday. I’m guessing that if you are going to this show you’ve had your tickets for months now, but thanks to the gigantic venue, the concert isn’t sold out yet. There’s no better way to close out this week than reliving the mid-2000s in all its alt-rock radio glory, if only so you can tell your kids that you saw these two rock giants in their waning heyday.
