Despite their allegiance to pure, unadulterated doom metal, it’s not difficult to understand the crossover appeal of Pallbearer. Massive yet gorgeous guitar tones, soaring vocals, textured atmospheres, complex melodies — they all have their critical role to play within the group’s sprawling epics. The band’s stirring 2014 album, Foundations of Burden, was a rare beast, the kind that managed to top its career-launching predecessor in every way imaginable while clearing room for new innovations. For a band obsessed with dynamic turns and immense tempo shifts, there is an ease and accessibility to their songwriting that’s almost uncanny. Music this colossally heavy and elegantly meditative isn’t supposed to be this damn catchy, but that’s the magic of Pallbearer.
