Guillermo CastroWith Wrecking Ball ATL and Athens Popfest still burning bright in our collective consciousness, it’s hard to imagine this week could be any more hectic or memorable. But with JORTSFEST and the Atlanta Record Label Fest looming this weekend, local and DIY music fans will have little time to decompress and recharge before stepping into the void once again. The quality of talent and diversity of sounds performing at both these events is pretty staggering, and with JORTSFEST being a free festival, lack of funds isn’t a concern. So catch whatever ZZZs you need and come out and support some of the city’s brightest and best.
Want to get a head start on everybody else? There’s plenty of great shows strewn throughout the week starting tonight when Cleveland punks Vanilla Poppers take over Murmur. Looking for something softer and more reflective? Make sure not to miss dreamy folk rockers Florist who are in the area for a pair of performances — tonight at the Caledonia Lounge and tomorrow at the Mammal Gallery. Both shows come with stellar local support.
From there things just get downright cluttered, but certainly no less promising. Thursday has at least 9 solid lineups to choose from, including Shampoo’s record release party for new LP, Terrible Heat, and the first performance in experimental hip-hop collective WAKE’s new call-to-action series, which seeks to merge art with community activism.
Friday doesn’t offer any respite either as psychedelic rap group the Difference Machine leads another excellent local bill at Aisle 5, ATL Collective tries their hand at the sultry bedroom sounds of TLC’s timeless pop classic, CrazySexyCool, and Reptar, who headline Atlanta’s Terminal West on Wednesday, play in front of what’s sure to be an appreciative hometown audience at the 40 Watt. If all that sounds like a whirlwind, that’s because… well, duh, it totally is. So hunker down, strap in, and live as much of it as you possibly can.
