For those of us in Atlanta this week, we have some fairly obvious concert decisions to make starting tonight when ATL favorite sons Deerhunter return to the Variety Playhouse. Then, as the perfect bookend to the work week, we have Creative Loafing cover gals, the Coathangers, celebrating the release of their new LP, Nosebleed Weekend, on Friday at Star Bar. But you already knew that, right? So rather than hit you with the obvious, this week I want to let you in on a little secret. From the dark, twisted heart of Philly comes Fight Amp, a noise rock and sludge machine built for maximum carnage. For years, the trio has been slugging it out in the trenches, cranking out solid records and touring incessantly. But on their most recent EP, Constantly Off, the band has really found their stride, embedding just the right touch of eerie melodic tunefulness into their lumbering riffs and pulverizing grooves. Fans of the classic Amphetamine Reptile style developed by the likes of Jesus Lizard and Unsane should make this show a high priority. Fight Amp deliver the sort of loud, brutal, ugly noise that will leave you happy and exhausted when you stumble out of the EARL with a belly full of PBR and a body full of bruises.
