Released in April, “Cicadas” is the latest single from local post-rock trio Capillaries, joining “No Winter No Sleep,” “Hypercube,” and “Ukraine” (the latter of which was released a year ago) for an upcoming EP that feels like it’s been years in the making.

For anyone familiar with the band, the track shouldn’t come as a surprise: the first two and half minutes find them ambling forward modestly in restrained bliss — sanguine, but at the same time, portentous. They wind down briefly only to build up quickly to a crescendo before spending the last two minutes jamming, but in a more contemplative sense: truly, they sound like they are one with the universe.

The track may be somewhat predictable and clichéd in terms of the genre, but Capillaries are (rather thanklessly) filling a void in the local scene; that is, the shimmering, ambient post-rock popularized by bands like aural explorers Explosions in the Sky, Mono, and This Will Destroy You. Here’s hoping the new EP is out sometime soon, but in the meantime, don’t forget about their acclaimed full length, Into the History of Light, available for download now via their Bandcamp page.
