When bands find themselves on the brink of making a significant breakthrough, they’re often faced with walking a precarious tightrope between staying true to their roots and showing genuine growth. Not that these two paths are mutually exclusive per se, but it can be difficult for artists to avoid the tug of war that occurs when creative risks come at odds with sticking to what earned them success in the first place. With their new single “I go down on the breeze,” however, Atlanta trio floral print show they not only have the balance and skill to walk that line, but they do it with a casual confidence that’s impressive to take in.
As the lead single from the group’s second record with indie imprint Tiny Engines, “I go down on the breeze” sees floral print traversing vaguely familiar territory. The song snakes between moody emo grooves, punctuating bursts of heavy distortion, angular punk, mathy breakdowns, and about a half-dozen more iterations of the off-kilter rock the threesome have been pursuing since their inception. But what makes the track remarkable is it’s cool efficiency; despite the constant morphing and leaping around, it never feels like the band is forcing the action or experimenting without purpose. Instead we’re presented with a group that has upped the ante in significant ways without sacrificing the shapeshifting qualities that have made them such a compelling act to follow.
