Awful Records leader Father is at it again with his grimy yet sublime lyrics about the usual women and drugs. The flow of “Slow Dance 2” paints listeners into a blanket of chilly vibes and gray monotones that pretty much match Atlanta’s weather right now in some alternate universe of Frank Ocean’s “Pyramids.” Taken from his upcoming album I’m a Piece of S**t, the track is driven with a soft ghetto feel.
Father has been one of Atlanta’s most talked about artists since around this time in 2015, but let’s be honest: we’ve had his name in our mouths since “Wrist” came out with iLoveMakonnen and Key! in the summer of 2014. In many of his works, he puts us in this alluded pool of darkness and intimacy and “Slow Dance 2” fits neatly into Awful’s new genre of suburban trap glorifying money, women, pinky props, and having a good time in a dramatic satire of teenage fantasy.
Some people call the man wildin’ on some other shit (which he probably is), but Father and the entire Awful Records crew have worked hard enough for a supporting fan base and international attention, so let’s not snub them out too soon, and keep up with these free-spirited kids.
