The looming darkness that lurks in the corners of Cowboy Curtys’ “Double Dang,” serves more as an invitation than a warning. Released just yesterday, the new single from the southern garage-psych group hits with a come-out-if-you-dare intensity generally reserved for impromptu road trips and raging all-nighters. It’s a call to set your fears aside and embrace whatever life throws at you. Or to hear bandleader Josh Parsons describe it, “Something reckless, ya know. Buckle up, or don’t.”
As the first single to be revealed off the group’s forthcoming debut, Commotions, the song sets a rambling, bleary-eyed tone. It stays true to the band’s diverse influences, melding driving rock riffs with hints of hardcore and a backwoods country attitude. Once you learn the album’s namesake is a worn-down strip club in Parsons’ hometown, certain expectations are set in your mind. Fortunately, the track’s taut rhythmic urgency and Parsons’ stormy, throw caution to the wind overtures allow it to live up to the hype.
“If you know me, you know I’m not shy to a good time,” Parsons explains. “It’s pretty much the theme of the record. I wanted to open with a song for the blehs—[a] song lyric and term reserved for only the closest of friends. Something reckless, ya know. Buckle up, or don’t.”
