Decatur-based Bear Kids Recordings has always been more concerned with aesthetic and format than genre. Their willingness to embrace a variety of pop, folk, and rock is once again evident on Cub Songs Vol. 1. The result is both captivating and comfortable, like a mixtape from an old friend.
The 14-track album is the first compilation to be released by the label; a celebration of success that is often elusive for young imprints. Like most of their releases, Cub Songs is designed to be heard on cassette. The opposing sides define the listening experience, with the past year’s highlights on side A and a variety of unreleased cuts on side B.
To anyone marginally familiar with Atlanta music, side A holds few surprises. Post-pop stalwarts Small Reactions provide one of their most immediate tracks from 2015, “Hung from Wire,” along with particularly catchy songs from Coma Girls and Pony League (formerly known as Cute Boots). Side B offers a bit more diversity, including “Sweet Madeline,” one of the strongest tracks from John Vournakis’ recent album, The Devil You Know. Cub Songs closes with “Income,” a fiery live track from Wasted Wine. Live tracks on compilations often feel like filler, which is why I was a bit surprised to see one closing out the album. Despite the odd placement, “Income” ends the proceedings with a fun dose of unpredictability.
Cub Songs succeeds as both an introduction to Bear Kids’ roster and a robust tasting menu for previous fans. However, it would have been nice to hear more unreleased tracks and deep cuts. Hopefully the coming year will provide Bear Kids with material for a more diverse Volume 2.
