All the Saints were signed to Touch & Go shortly before the esteemed label disintegrated, but the three-piece have taken their time reimagining a deferred dream. Despite missing out on national notoriety, they’ve become a cornerstone in Atlanta, weathering a scene prone to cyclical trends while re-purposing stoner riffs as a way to explore the more spacious side of alternative rock. With the release of their new single “Creak,” the band announce their long-awaited third LP Look Like You’re Going Somewhere, which took shape over the span of three days at Maze Studios in Cabbagetown thanks to producer Jason Kingsland (Deerhunter, Band of Horses) and Chunklet Industries.
It’s easy to sink into the familiar reverie of Matt Lambert’s urgent croon on the track, but “Creak” is a statement of evolution for a trio whose sound, while immediately recognizable, can often be difficult to parse. The casual listener might simply file the band’s work somewhere in the realm of heavy music, but since critics love to dive into bizarro analogies, an apt comparison would be Thurston Moore wandering on stage at Roadburn in ‘03, rewriting all of Fu Manchu’s riffs in an introspective trance, and broadcasting it via college radio at four in the morning. In short, the group have found a way to combine serious artistic ambition with contemplative jams in a way that never feels derivative or pretentious.
Throughout the track, All the Saints demonstrate a willingness to chill in a groove free from distraction, but by the final minute entropy drowns the insistent rhythm in a fizzling warble. The ambient feedback of the outro recalls Lambert’s more experimental solo project Night Cleaner, even though similar examples of purposeful noise can be found on their 2012 psychedelic masterwork Intro to Fractions, which Chunklet just re-released on Bandcamp and other streaming platforms. Whether the rest of Look Like You’re Going Somewhere finds the band wandering further into stoner territory or whether “Creak” is a red-eyed red herring, the album promises to be a rich and rewarding listen.
Look Like You’re Going Somewhere will be available digitally and on wax June 25. Pre-orders are available here.
