When we first encountered Alexis Roberts, she was mystifying us with the plaintive elegance of her debut single, “Play House.” It was an improbable first effort, effortless and fully formed, resonating with the kind of grace and polish usually reserved for artists with more experience and larger bank rolls. But here she is, back at it once again with another ambient pop stunner, proving that all the accolades we bestowed upon her weren’t misplaced.
If anything, “Waste My Time” ramps up expectations for the fledgling artist as Roberts delivers a hypnotic meditation on love and commitment over a throbbing, moody soundtrack. Sonically, she glides over much of the same atmospheres and textures as her debut — deep bass rhythms, muted synth pulses, and diaphanous melodies that billow around her vocals like so much smoke. Throughout the cut, her voice remains a thing of impressionistic beauty — airy and mysterious but with an undercurrent of tension that allows her to confidently explore the track’s darker edges. It may be early in Roberts’ career, but she is already crafting some of the most compelling music in the city, regardless of genre.
