The Buckhead Theatre was the temporary home to the Baltimore-based electronic group, Animal Collective on Saturday night. Coming off the mutes success of their latest album, Painting With, the neo-psychedelia group brought their back-to-nature futurism to a delighted sold out audience.

Opening the show was Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The California artist came out to the stage with only a microphone headset and her small box of electronic equipment. From the start, she captivated the audience with a plethora of enchanting soundscapes. It’s very easy to see why Animal Collective had picked her as an opener; her sound certainly took some cues from the group, most specifically from Panda Bear’s ambient warmth.

Large statues and stage decorations lined the stage for the headliner’s performance. The band took the stage and immediately moved into a mixed setlist of songs, featuring tracks such as “Alvin Row” dating all the way back from their debut, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished. This, plus tracks such as “Floridada,” had the entire audience dancing, but at times the band toned down the intensity to play more intricate and emotional songs such as “Bees.” At these moments, the band and audience were both immersed in the complex rhythms and light show that were taking place. The group ended their set with fan favorite “Golden Gal,” which left the crowd buzzing at the end of the night.
