A man of many monikers, Hunter Pietrobon is likely best known for his time as co-leader of former Atlanta art punks Gun Party where he often went by the alias Hawthorn T. Glitter, a.k.a. one half of the Glitter Twins, a creative partnership he shared with his sister Abbey. Along the way, he’s acquired a few other pseudonyms, including Weston Hunter Pierce and Slappy Whitmayer, but none of them have resonated with the same mischievous allure of his glistering stage name.

These days, however, Pietrobon goes by the less audacious moniker The Boy Jones, a decision which is perhaps meant to be representative of the stripped-back folk and intimate Americana he’s been peddling since early last year. It’s a far cry from Gun Party’s messy screeds and funk-punk exhortations, but Pietrobon handles his duties admirably, singing with quiet confidence and warm-blooded conviction in a style that’s both plaintive and confessional.

Taken from his self-titled debut EP, “Give It Heart” is one of his more soulful and uplifting tunes, a bare-bones folk number about perseverance and self-reliance in the face of life’s cold impermanence and unyielding uncertainty. The video, directed by Joey Brodnax, is appropriately understated, working in subtle metaphors rather than any of overt symbolism. With the exception of a few close-ups of Pietrobon singing, the shots are languid, the framing long and wide. Much like the song, it never tries to do too much, proving once again that the most poignant moments require little explanation.
