The only thing missing from Immaterial Possession’s new neopagan masterpiece is a maypole and maybe a few dryads. In classic form for the Athens’ band, the video harnesses folk art whimsy, Greco-roman imagery, and wide-eyed ‘60s curiosity with the intention of setting the listener free to experience existence.

Shot on Super 8, the video for “In the Loom” channels the unkempt spirit of creation and the sensuality of nature, while retaining an air of mystery behind the blooming flowers and cavernous copulation. The raw production of the track matches the organic style of the video, with each chord sprouting from freshly tilled meditative mindscapes as cymbal wash intertwines with jazz-inflected chords. The result is spacious but immediate, so the listener’s presence becomes voyeuristic and nearly transgressive, like standing too close to someone reading poetry or peering into the mating ritual of some rare bird.

Despite the haunting theatrics, “In the Loom” proves there can be comfort in mystery and that the best psychedelic music doesn’t have to be overbearing. Maybe all we need to do to find our higher self is relax and enjoy the afternoon. Maybe the real ghosts were the friends we made along the way.
