With all the über-serious promotional pitches we get on a daily basis, it’s refreshing to receive a press release that’s a little self-deprecating and off-the-cuff. The new single from Hunter Morris & Blue Blood was written in an hour and recorded on a whim. It’s not exactly the Athens group at their most inventive, but the bubbly pop jam is a lot of fun and manages to wrangle in support from some of the Classic City’s best. Featuring assistance from Gene Woolfolk (guitar, drums, special effects), Vaughan Lamb (bass), Drew Beskin (guitar, glockenspiel), Phillip Brantley (guitar, backing vocals), Erica Strout (vocals), and Alec Stanley (guitar), “White Claws & Adderalls” finds Morris and company taking playful shots at UGA’s party-heavy campus culture.
“I wrote this ridiculous song in about an hour (I know that is hard to believe considering the song’s profound lyrical depth) after a weekend of observing Athens college culture at its finest,” Morris explains. “Then I kind of decided on a whim to record it, so Hank [Sullivant] and I recorded a template at the house. Then we got a bunch of friends together in the studio and knocked out the rest. We were very sober and didn’t laugh at all. Very serious stuff, you know?”
Created by Morris with help from production and management firm Super Canoe, the video was built using low-quality cellphone footage. The intentionally cheesy clip was shot during what Morris calls a “crash and burn Athens weekend,” and stars a yellow piñata named Julio. The goofy, makeshift affair will likely serve as Blue Blood’s last promotional effort before the group wrap up the final touches on their upcoming third full length.
