Drifting between warm haze and a kind of lush intricacy, “Nostalgia” is the sort of song that’s meant to envelop you and carry you away. It’s airy and bittersweet, led by gorgeous ambient percussion and tasteful atmospheres that land somewhere between the intimacy of bedroom pop and the sprawling sonics of the Antlers or Phosphorescent. In many ways, McKenzie Jasper’s luminous single holds true to its title; it’s wistful and reflective, leading the listener backward and inward to a place that’s comfortably familiar and yet as distant as a dream. “Say what you wanna say / Remember everything,” he pleads on the track’s dreamy coda, an urgent reminder that memory can be intentional as well as fleeting.

Filmed and self-produced at his home during the pandemic, the video mimics the song’s layered arrangement with a gauzy collage of visuals that stack upon one another. Although it’s sometimes difficult to make out the action, it’s clear much of the footage consists of Jasper dancing, lost in his own reverie. The golden hues and sense of depth create an immersive canvas that invites the viewer to explore, to seek out the varying details and movements. The overall effect is simple yet mesmerizing, an alluring accompaniment to a majestic soundscape.
