We don’t usually do this. I mean, it’s no secret we’re a site that’s focused on local artists. But on a few rare occasions, we’ve made an exception and highlighted a touring band that’s from outside the scene. In the case of Birmingham trio the Hollywood Horses, they reached out in February with the hopes of premiering a video ahead of an April show at Star Bar. We gave it a listen, took a shine to the song’s sparkling power pop, and agreed to do it. Then, well, the world went to shit.
The tour was canceled, of course. Just another casualty of the coronavirus. But that doesn’t we can’t press forward and show the Hollywood Horses some love. Consisting of Breely Flower (drums, vocals), Andrew Hollywood (guitar, synth, vocals), and Michael Hollywood (bass), the group released their debut FunnySexyCool in May of last year. The eight-song record is heavy on sharps hooks and punchy grooves as evidenced by the driving “Library Book.” The two-minute jam has all the trappings of a classic break-up song, delivering plenty of piss-off attitude as Flower declares, “You’re not the only game in town.”
Directed by Michelle Hollywood and Secret Playground, the video maintains the song’s spunky energy with charismatic performances and some cool psychedelic undertones. It’s a fun watch, and as good a reason as any to catch the Hollywood Horses next time they’re in town.
