The gray aces of the world don’t own much real estate in the neighborhood of pop music. Heterosexual landlords bought up all the property years ago; from the Love Shack to the Heartbreak Hotel, almost every street you turn on features some monument to breaking up, making up, stripping down, or sticking around with a certain partner. Where can a weary asexual traveler turn for a safe place to rest? On a side street toward Athens, ringleader AC Carter has pitched a new circus tent to celebrate celibacy. Formerly known as Lambda Celsius, they now call themselves Klypi, and their first pageant “I’m Fine” banishes love from the premises.

With both sound and vision, “I’m Fine” presents a fresh canvas for the multidisciplinary artist to paint their message of abstinence. While the rest of the crew frolics in the vibrant fabrics of Carter’s design, our protagonist often sports bedsheet-white duds and elf ears. The look suggests innocence and youth—a disciple of Peter Pan, ageless and virginal. Plentiful light and pastel walls stand in sharp contrast to their repertoire shrouded in dusk; likewise, the cheery vocals, simple lyrics, and happier tone push Klypi further into pop than Lambda Celsius ever dared to go. Black-and-white ball pits, impromptu Twister sessions, and even a purple Pop-Tart wet suit converge to underscore Carter’s point: this gray ace doesn’t need romance or sex to have a good time. It’s a message we don’t see often in this town, so we’re definitely gonna join this party while there are still some vacancies.

“I’m Fine” is in anticipation of Klypi’s forthcoming full length to be released later this year. The LP will see them working in close collaboration with Los Angeles artist Precious Child.
