If you take stock in cosmic concepts like destiny or serendipity, then perhaps you’ll find no coincidence in the fact that Lesibu Grand vocalist Tyler-Simone Molton and bassist John Renaud only came together as songwriting partners after bumping into one another at a Pains of Being Pure at Heart show at the EARL. Prior to that, the two had been acquaintances, but it took that moment of mutual recognition and acknowledgment for the pair to realize their creative interests aligned far more than they originally thought.

Fast forward nearly two years and Lesibu Grand appear poised to make their presence felt in the Atlanta scene. Last month, the indie pop five-piece unveiled their debut single “Hush Hush,” and today we’re excited to share the accompanying video for the track. It’s a promising first effort—sleek, lush, and confidently delivered. Tyler-Simone has the sort of ethereal voice that glides gently over each glimmering guitar chard and throbbing groove, but while the song tumbles forward with a kind of effervescent energy, the lyrics point towards something darker scraping below the surface.

“I wrote the words to this song to express feelings of insecurity and uncertainty I was having,” says Tyler-Simone. “We all have inner voices telling us how we should feel or what we should do, and sometimes they’re in conflict with each other. In ‘Hush Hush’ I portray a version of myself struggling to manage this inner turmoil, imploring the more troubling voices to quiet down.”

With their first single finally out in the world, the band plans to get down to the business of promoting the group and playing as many local shows as they can. A second single, “The Legend of Miranda,” is scheduled for release on May 17 and according to Renaud it’s the next step in what should be a steady string of new offerings: “We have a deep vault of original songs written and in various stages of being recorded, so expect a new song with video every few months.”

Lesibu Grand will perform on Sat., May 11 at the EARL alongside K Michelle DuBois and Twin Trances. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. 21+ to enter.
