Listening to password:password sparkle and shimmer their way through “Price,” the moody lead single from their forthcoming debut Session Boyfriend, it’s impressive to note the song marks just the second public release from the fledgling group. Consisting of Claire Lacombe (vocals), Heath Murphy (synthesizer), Chris Mickas (guitar), Merritt Treaster (bass), and Jed Paz (drums), the band officially formed at Georgia Tech in the fall of 2017, and unveiled their first single “Thursday” in September 2018. With a history of collaborating in past groups and projects, the five-piece have had time to learn one another’s strengths and quirks, and that sense of free-flowing cohesion is part of what makes the track so intriguing.

Informed by the group’s shared love of indie pop and ‘90s shoegaze, “Price” shows password:password’s propensity for crafting taut yet dreamy music that can both stretch languorously into the stratosphere and come thundering down in stormy sheets. Lacombe’s radiant vocals occupies much of the song’s forefront; it’s difficult to listen to the opening verse and not find yourself swept up in the hypnotic luster of her voice. But once the ascension begins and all those seething, wind-tossed guitars begin to congeal into something like a gleaming tempest, the song breaks into even more beguiling territory. As first impressions go it’s nearly perfect—a towering, mesmeric effort that leaves you wanting more.
