There’s tension and drama abound in “Lurching in the Dark,” the new single from local alt-rock trio A Very Loud Death. It’s there in Chris Edge’s measured vocals, it’s there in the springy thrust of the guitars and each dynamic transition the band deftly unfurls. The opportunity for bombastic overreach here is considerable; it’s a song ripe for exaggerated emotional appeals and contrived theatrics, but credit the band for dialing back the melodrama and refining each passage until every surface appears seamless and smooth. Even the threesome’s acceleration and launch into the fiery chorus, while expected, feels taut and purposeful, an organic extension of the song’s enticing cinematic allure.
Shot and directed by Logan Ray Morrissey, the video latches onto that feeling of mysterious fascination and channels it into a noir thriller with religious and supernatural overtones. Much like the single itself, it traces themes of temptation, love, and hate with the devil himself serving as the animating force behind the narrative. Overall, it’s a compelling display of dexterous musicianship rendered with a fanciful twist of Southern Gothic.
