Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: Every Friday our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over that week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.

Neighbor Lady

Neighbor Lady – “Let It Bleed”

From the upcoming LP, Maybe Later

Anxiety and blood go hand in hand. In fact, if I showed you my hands now, you’d see the blood I’ve smeared from the scab on my back; if you leafed through my closets, you’d find stacks of pillowcases speckled with ugly brown spots. I know, I imagine Neighbor Lady speak on a metaphorical level when Emily Braden declares so righteously that she’ll let it bleed—as with their last single “Fine,” this one also touches on the tension that comes with entangling too far in someone else. But listen to how dirty and crimson the riffs sound, before the bass rolls in. Listen to how Braden dares you to call her mad: “you have no idea what’s gotten into me.” An outpour of emotion spills out sometimes like blood—not everyone can handle you when the wounds are open, and they’ll stare at the scabs long after the damage is done. – Lee Adcock

Maybe Later is out May 11. Pre-orders are available here.

Neighbor Lady will celebrate the release of Maybe later on Fri., May 18 at 529. More acts TBA. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8-10. 21+ to enter.

Ziggy2Playa – “Back in the Day”

From the standalone single

The melancholy of nostalgia filters through Ziggy2Playa’s new single “Back in the Day.” It follows in the footsteps of his previous work and expands on his penchant for downtempo R&B, but there’s more to the track than breezy delivery. The spoken word style meshes with the candid content, as Ziggy assesses past relationships through vivid memories and stark metaphors, leaving the listener caught in their own daydreams and recollections. – Russell Rockwell

TWINS – “Glass Breaks Glass”

From the upcoming LP, That Which Is Not Said

The persistently unfettered pulse that directs “Glass Breaks Glass” is almost maniacally alluring. We’ve wandered these dark alleys and shadowy corridors with Matt Weiner before, but rarely has TWINS’ post-industrial synth explorations felt so clear-eyed and assured. But while it’s easy (and thrilling!) to surrender yourself to the track’s creeping mechanical haze, the intricacies contained within each fastidious groove yield their own seductive mysteries. But don’t be alarmed, this is no binary choice. You can get lost in Weiner’s wily contortions and deft left turns—just don’t forget to dance. – Guillermo Castro

That Which Is Not Said is out May 4. Pre-orders are available here.
